SUMMARY:Newtown Theatre Environmental Film Festival & Native Plant Pop-Up Garden
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the environment! Don’t miss this chance for a fun night out on the last day of our Pop-up Native Plant Garden! Enjoy light fare and craft brews from Newtown Brewing Company (a member of Audubon’s Brewers for the Delaware River Association)\, before taking in four short films about our connection to the Delaware River\, the links between critical fish populations it supports and our local economy\, and the importance of native plants in keeping our water clean and providing habitat for birds. \nFollowing the films\, join our panel of experts – including one of the filmmakers – for a conversation about these important issues and how you can help to protect the resources we all need. \nAttendees will be eligible to win some of the beautiful plants in the garden when we raffle them off to take home. \nTickets to this exciting event will be available at https://www.thenewtowntheatre.com/events/2019/9/19/newtown-environmental-fest! \nThe Newtown Native Plant Project (NNPP) is an initiative of the Newtown Township\, Environmental Advisory Council\, Newtown Borough\, Bucks County Audubon Society\, Audubon Pennsylvania\, and Newtown volunteers. The NNPP Pop-Up Garden is being conducted with the assistance of the Newtown Theatre\, a Master Gardener from the Penn State Extension Master Gardener Program and Gino’s Nursery. \nThe Newtown Environmental Film Festival is brought to you in partnership with the Newtown Theatre and the Newtown Native Plant Project. \nThe event is sponsored by Waitkus Design\, Newtown Borough\, Newtown Borough EAC\, Newtown Democrats\, Soulutions For Daily Living\, and Espenshade Nonprofit Consulting LLC.

SUMMARY:Nature Lover's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Bucks County Audubon Society welcomes you to join us at the Doylestown Bookshop for a fun and engaging discussion about all things nature. We will be meeting the 4th Thursday evening of the month\, starting at 6:15 p.m. We welcome your insights and input for future readings. Bring a friend and make a new one and we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting. \nThis month\, we shall be discussing “The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating” by E. Bailey. \nIn a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature\, Elisabeth Tova Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her encounter with a Neohelix albolabris-a common woodland snail. While an illness keeps her bedridden\, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result\, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater understanding of her own place in the world. Intrigued by the snail’s molluscan anatomy\, cryptic defenses\, clear decision making\, hydraulic locomotion\, and courtship activities\, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer\, offering a candid and engaging look into the curious life of this underappreciated small animal. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience\, showing us how a small part of the natural world can illuminate our own human existence\, while providing an appreciation of what it means to be fully alive.

SUMMARY:Climate Watch: Citizen Science Training
DESCRIPTION:Beginning this winter\, volunteers for Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch will be visiting their favorite birding spots twice a year\, looking for bluebirds and nuthatches. However\, these familiar species are more than just a joy to behold––both of them can teach scientists how birds are coping with our warming world. By comparing volunteers’ observations of bluebirds and nuthatches\, Climate Watch will test the accuracy of Audubon’s predictions and determine how birds are responding to a changing climate. \nAt this event\, volunteers will learn all the ins-and-outs of Climate Watch\, including how to choose survey points\, conduct surveys in the field\, and submit their final results to the Climate Watch team. The presentation will also explain how Climate Watch is already shedding light on the ways some of our most familiar birds are responding to climate change. Volunteers will also have the chance to participate in a trial-run of a survey\, and the opportunity to discuss their assignment for the count with one of Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch coordinators. \nWant to be a part of this training day so that you can participate in the Climate watch project? Who wins and who loses in the battle for power in the 21st century? Through the stories of workers and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and China\, Catching the Sun captures the global race to lead the clean energy future. Over the course of a solar jobs training program\, Catching the Sun follows the hope and heartbreak of unemployed American workers seeking jobs in the solar industry.  With countries like China investing in innovative technologies and capitalizing on this trillion-dollar opportunity\, Catching the Sun tells the story of the global energy transition from the perspective of workers and entrepreneurs building solutions to income inequality and climate change with their own hands. Their successes and failures speak to one of the biggest questions of our time: will the U.S. actually be able to build a clean energy economy? Catching the Sun premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was named a 2016 New York Times Critics’ Pick. It’s also part of American Film Showcase\, shown at U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions around the world. The film released globally on Netflix with Executive Producer Leonardo DiCaprio on Earth Day 2016. Catching the Sun was nominated by the Environmental Media Association for the 2016 EMA Award for Best Documentary. \nWatch the trailer for Catching the Sun by clicking Here! \nThis is a free event for the public\, however space is limited to 25\, so register early!
