SUMMARY:Nature Lover's Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Bucks County Audubon Society welcomes you to join us at the Doylestown Bookshop for a fun and engaging discussion about all things nature. We will be meeting the 4th Thursday evening of the month\, starting at 6:15 p.m. We welcome your insights and input for future readings. Bring a friend and make a new one and we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting. \nThis month\, we shall be discussing “The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating” by E. Bailey. \nIn a work that beautifully demonstrates the rewards of closely observing nature\, Elisabeth Tova Bailey shares an inspiring and intimate story of her encounter with a Neohelix albolabris-a common woodland snail. While an illness keeps her bedridden\, Bailey watches a wild snail that has taken up residence on her nightstand. As a result\, she discovers the solace and sense of wonder that this mysterious creature brings and comes to a greater understanding of her own place in the world. Intrigued by the snail’s molluscan anatomy\, cryptic defenses\, clear decision making\, hydraulic locomotion\, and courtship activities\, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer\, offering a candid and engaging look into the curious life of this underappreciated small animal. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience\, showing us how a small part of the natural world can illuminate our own human existence\, while providing an appreciation of what it means to be fully alive.

SUMMARY:Climate Watch: Citizen Science Training
DESCRIPTION:Beginning this winter\, volunteers for Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch will be visiting their favorite birding spots twice a year\, looking for bluebirds and nuthatches. However\, these familiar species are more than just a joy to behold––both of them can teach scientists how birds are coping with our warming world. By comparing volunteers’ observations of bluebirds and nuthatches\, Climate Watch will test the accuracy of Audubon’s predictions and determine how birds are responding to a changing climate. \nAt this event\, volunteers will learn all the ins-and-outs of Climate Watch\, including how to choose survey points\, conduct surveys in the field\, and submit their final results to the Climate Watch team. The presentation will also explain how Climate Watch is already shedding light on the ways some of our most familiar birds are responding to climate change. Volunteers will also have the chance to participate in a trial-run of a survey\, and the opportunity to discuss their assignment for the count with one of Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch coordinators. \nWant to be a part of this training day so that you can participate in the Climate watch project? Contact our Citizen Science Committee Members:\nBob McGarry – rjmcg27@gmail.com OR  LeRoy Tabb – tabbleroy@gmail.com

SUMMARY:"Catching the Sun" Movie Screening
DESCRIPTION:2019 is our 50th Anniversary and we are so excited to announce that this year’s Capital Campaign is for Bucks Audubon to go solar! Many townships in Bucks County and beyond are making a big push for sustainable energy and solar seems to be a popular option. Explore the global race to a clean energy future and how solar can create local jobs through this incredible documentary – “Catching the Sun”\, hosted at Bucks County Audubon Society! \nAn unemployed American worker\, a Tea Party activist\, and a Chinese solar entrepreneur race to lead the clean energy future. Who wins and who loses in the battle for power in the 21st century? Through the stories of workers and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and China\, Catching the Sun captures the global race to lead the clean energy future. Over the course of a solar jobs training program\, Catching the Sun follows the hope and heartbreak of unemployed American workers seeking jobs in the solar industry.  With countries like China investing in innovative technologies and capitalizing on this trillion-dollar opportunity\, Catching the Sun tells the story of the global energy transition from the perspective of workers and entrepreneurs building solutions to income inequality and climate change with their own hands. Their successes and failures speak to one of the biggest questions of our time: will the U.S. actually be able to build a clean energy economy? Catching the Sun premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was named a 2016 New York Times Critics’ Pick. It’s also part of American Film Showcase\, shown at U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions around the world. The film released globally on Netflix with Executive Producer Leonardo DiCaprio on Earth Day 2016. Catching the Sun was nominated by the Environmental Media Association for the 2016 EMA Award for Best Documentary. \nWatch the trailer for Catching the Sun by clicking Here! \nThis is a free event for the public\, however space is limited to 25\, so register early! Click here to reserve your spot. Inclement weather date – January 17th. Stay tuned on our social media pages and website for updates about weather! \nSponsored by Ready for 100: MontCo \nWho is Ready for 100:MontCo? Click here to learn more about them and their mission!

SUMMARY:Advocacy for a Cleaner Earth *****Cancelled due to inclement weather****
DESCRIPTION:Join BCAS and other environmental professionals to learn more about our environment and what personal actions we can do to help make the world a better place! \nThis month’s topic is “Saving Our Birds: What’s Killing Our Birds and What You Can Do About It.” presented by Phil Witmer. \nPhil Witmer is an avid birder and conservationist with over 30 years birding experience. He is a past board member of Bucks County Audubon Society and current president of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club\, one of the oldest birding clubs in the country. He has consulted with Audubon PA and is active in their local BirdTown initiatives. He volunteers banding Northern Saw-whet owls and has attended Powdermill Preserve’s trainings on passerine banding. While certainly not an expert on bird identification\, he has devoted much time to the conservation of birds\, the forces driving their decline and what we need to do to save them. He leads walks at Bucks County Audubon Society and lectures on a variety of related topics. \nThis free event will take place at Delaware Valley University. Parking is off of the New Britain Rd.
