SUMMARY:Climate Watch: Citizen Science Training
DESCRIPTION:Beginning this winter\, volunteers for Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch will be visiting their favorite birding spots twice a year\, looking for bluebirds and nuthatches. However\, these familiar species are more than just a joy to behold––both of them can teach scientists how birds are coping with our warming world. By comparing volunteers’ observations of bluebirds and nuthatches\, Climate Watch will test the accuracy of Audubon’s predictions and determine how birds are responding to a changing climate. \nAt this event\, volunteers will learn all the ins-and-outs of Climate Watch\, including how to choose survey points\, conduct surveys in the field\, and submit their final results to the Climate Watch team. The presentation will also explain how Climate Watch is already shedding light on the ways some of our most familiar birds are responding to climate change. Volunteers will also have the chance to participate in a trial-run of a survey\, and the opportunity to discuss their assignment for the count with one of Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch coordinators. \nWant to be a part of this training day so that you can participate in the Climate watch project? Contact our Citizen Science Committee Members:\nBob McGarry – rjmcg27@gmail.com OR  LeRoy Tabb – tabbleroy@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Nighthawk Watch
DESCRIPTION:Join Bob McGarry for an evening of birding for Nighthawks at Fort Washington State park. Common Nighthawks are most active at dawn and dusk\, not night\, while they forage for aerial insects.Recent studies suggest a substantial decline in numbers of this species\, perhaps owing to increased predation\, indiscriminate use of pesticides leading to lowered insect numbers\, or habitat loss. Feel free to bring your binoculars and/or camera! Dress appropriately. \nThis event is free\, but we require registration. Space is capped at 20 participants\, so make sure to sign up early! \nIf you are interested in carpooling to the event\, please arrive at Bucks County Audubon Society (2877 Creamery Road\, New Hope\, PA 18938) at 5pm.

SUMMARY:Advocacy for a Cleaner Earth *****Cancelled due to inclement weather****
DESCRIPTION:Join BCAS and other environmental professionals to learn more about our environment and what personal actions we can do to help make the world a better place! \nThis month’s topic is “Saving Our Birds: What’s Killing Our Birds and What You Can Do About It.” presented by Phil Witmer. \nPhil Witmer is an avid birder and conservationist with over 30 years birding experience. He is a past board member of Bucks County Audubon Society and current president of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club\, one of the oldest birding clubs in the country. He has consulted with Audubon PA and is active in their local BirdTown initiatives. He volunteers banding Northern Saw-whet owls and has attended Powdermill Preserve’s trainings on passerine banding. While certainly not an expert on bird identification\, he has devoted much time to the conservation of birds\, the forces driving their decline and what we need to do to save them. He leads walks at Bucks County Audubon Society and lectures on a variety of related topics. \nThis free event will take place at Delaware Valley University. Parking is off of the New Britain Rd. Entrance to the school.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join the nation’s longest running citizen science bird project by participating in the 118th Christmas Bird Count! It’s fun and easy and helps scientists understand what’s going on with our birds!\n\nThe data collected by observers over the past century allow Audubon researchers\, conservation biologists\, wildlife agencies and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey\, it provides a picture of how the continent’s bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years.\n\nThe long term perspective is vital for conservationists. It informs strategies to protect birds and their habitat\, and helps identify environmental issues with implications for people as well.\n\nAdmission is free\, but registration is required!\nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Bird/Window Collisions: Historical Research and Contemporary Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Join BCAS at the Academy of Natural Sciences to learn about this important conservation issue\, where keynote speaker\, Dr. Daniel Klem\, will address why the windows of our homes\, commercial buildings\, even iconic park visitor and bird research centers\, in urban\, suburban\, and rural settings are so fatal to all birds in their immediate vicinity. He will offer us his unique history of studying this topic from over four decades and his current cutting-edge research. The goal has and continues to be to save more bird lives from windows. He will end by inviting colleagues and the audience to pose questions and offer comments. \nRegister by clicking here! \n

SUMMARY:National Audubon Photo Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The National Audubon has selected contest winners from over 7\,000 entries—submitted from all 50 states\, DC\, and Canada—the winning photos were published in the May-June 2016 issue of Audubon magazine. These photos are now being sent from Audubon Chapter to Chapter to be on display for a few weeks. BCAS is honored to be able to display these award winning photographs. \nHalf of the species in the winning and honored photos are birds identified as threatened or endangered by climate change in Audubon’s Birds and Climate Change Report \, which shows that 314 bird species in North America face an uncertain future due to shifting climatic suitability. To learn more about the birds\, come out to the photo exhibit and read more at climate.audubon.org! \n

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Join Bucks County Audubon Society on January 1st\, 2017 to take part in the tradition of the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count! Data compiled in New Hope will record every individual bird species seen in a specified area\, contributing to a vast citizen science network that continues a tradition stretching back more than 100 years.  \nBirders of all ages are welcome to contribute to this fun\, nationwide citizen science project\, which provides ornithologists with a crucial snapshot of our native bird populations during the winter. Each individual count is performed in a count circle with a diameter of 15 miles. At least ten volunteers\, including a compiler to coordinate the process\, count in each circle. The volunteers break up into small parties and follow assigned routes\, which change little from year to year\, counting every bird. In most circles\, some people also watch feeders instead of following routes. As we have scheduled our count for New Year’s Day\, this is a great opportunity to take a “First Day Hike!” Start the New Year outside and on the right foot as you join us for this great event! \nTo sign up for a count\, please visit/contact Diane Smith at dianesmith@bcas.org or call 215-297-5880!
