SUMMARY:Newtown Action Circle
DESCRIPTION:Birds Tell Us!\nA Newtown Action Circle\nSunday\, September 23\nNewtown Township Building\, 100 Municipal Drive\, Newtown\, PA 18940\n1:00 PM – 4:00 PM \nWhat’s good for birds is good for people! \nBirds alert us to environmental threats\, and shifts in their habitats are indicators of how a changing climate is affecting us all. By protecting birds\, we can create a healthier planet for the benefit of people too\, but we can’t do it alone. \nThat’s why the Bucks Audubon\, Newtown Township’s Environmental Advisory Council\, and Audubon Pennsylvania invite you to join us for: \nBirds Tell Us!\nA Newtown Action Circle \nOn September 23\, we’ll gather at the Newtown Township Building to discuss the impact of climate on birds and other wildlife. \nFollowing short presentations on Audubon’s Climate Initiative\, an overview of Newtown’s Bird Town activities\, and program updates from Bucks Audubon….we’ll explore our own connections to birds and climate. Then\, after some brainstorming and group discussion\, we’ll decide as a community on a concrete action we can take to help resolve local climate challenges and protect birds in Newtown. \nSnacks and light refreshments will be provided. \nAll are welcome. \nPre-registration required for this exciting opportunity to share ideas\, meet new friends\, and take collective action for birds. \nLooking forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Nighthawk Watch
DESCRIPTION:Join Bob McGarry for an evening of birding for Nighthawks at Fort Washington State park. Common Nighthawks are most active at dawn and dusk\, not night\, while they forage for aerial insects.Recent studies suggest a substantial decline in numbers of this species\, perhaps owing to increased predation\, indiscriminate use of pesticides leading to lowered insect numbers\, or habitat loss. Feel free to bring your binoculars and/or camera! Dress appropriately. \nThis event is free\, but we require registration. Space is capped at 20 participants\, so make sure to sign up early! \nIf you are interested in carpooling to the event\, please arrive at Bucks County Audubon Society (2877 Creamery Road\, New Hope\, PA 18938) at 5pm.

These days\, when not birding or reading\, he writes and volunteers for Bucks County Audubon’s Advocacy and Education Committees. \nDiane Allison has lived in Tinicum township for 40 years.  She has served on the board of Bucks County Audubon\, the Tinicum Conservancy and the Palisades School District.  Diane is a graduate of Delaware Valley College and recently retired from Microbiological Quality Assurance for Johnson and Johnson.  Her interest in birds has taken her to many places including all 50 states\, Europe\, Central America\, South America\, the Galapagos Islands and the Caribbean.  Here at home she has been the compiler for the Central Bucks Audubon Christmas Bird Count and the compiler for all of Bucks County for the Pennsylvania Migration Count for nearly 20 years.   Diane is on the speaker’s bureau for the North American Bluebird Society and has built over 2000 bluebird boxes with school children and scouts.  She enjoys hiking\, nature photography and introducing people to the wonders of nature. \nBirding for Armas Hill began in Bucks County about 50 years ago\, and during his first weeks and years of birding\, many of his lifers were in the county.  Since then\, and since Long-eared Owls in the pines at Churchville and a Common Ground Dove in Newtown\, he has gotten to know many birds at many places throughout the world.\nHis life-list is now close to 5\,000 species of birds. That may seem like a lot\, but it’s about half of all bird species world-wide.About half of those birds he’s seen have been in South America\, with over 1\,000 each in Brazil and Ecuador. Additionally\, he’s birded in Argentina\, Chile\, Venezuela\, and heavily throughout Central America and Mexico\, and on nearly every Caribbean island. On the other side of the world\, Armas has birded in Australia\, in numerous European countries\, and in Japan and Korea. With over 35 visits in Japan\, he’s humbly an expert as to that country’s birds and other wildlife. \nCloser to home\, Armas was the author and voice on the phone of the weekly bird hot-line service\, the Philadelphia Birdline\, for about 30 years. Back in 1979\, when he began\, that was the prime way for birders to get info\, way before the internet. Later\, he did that weekly Birdline from Philadelphia\, and another from Delaware\, on the internet.  And for years he was the voice of Birdline Delaware each week on a radio station in Wilmington DE. \nBesides leading birding & nature tours throughout the world\, Armas\, for about 15 years\, organized pelagic trips for people to see seabirds and other marine life\, offshore from New Jersey\, Delaware\, and North Carolina. Even though Armas now lives in Delaware\, he is often back in Bucks\, where\, for him\, it all began.\nOver the years\, it is due to birding that he has had some wonderful experiences and has met many fine people. And\, for him\, that’s what birding is about.

SUMMARY:School Holiday Camp - Spring Break
DESCRIPTION:We get it; it’s hard when your child has off of school when you don’t! That’s why we created these “School Holiday Camps”. Drop off your child at 9am and pick them back up at 3pm after a fun-filled day of nature exploration and discovery! Remember\, you can register for one\, or all of the days – it’s up to you! \nEach day during March Spring Break features unique games\, hikes\, science experiments\, and crafts that all tie in to the week’s theme of habitats! \nMarch 26: Pond Dipping\nWhat types of animals live in the Audubon Pond? Let’s get our Pond nets and find out! (Water shoes recommended) \nMarch 27: Rotten Log\nWhat creepy crawlies lurk under the rotten logs that lie on the forest floor? Let’s roll some of them over and check them out! \nMarch 28: Creek Critters\nHow do animals not get swept away by the flowing water of our creek? We’ll take our stream nets and go flip over some rocks! (Water shoes needed) \nMarch 29: Fairy Gardens\nWhile we may not see them\, we like to think that our forest on the hill is home to fairies! Let’s use our engineering skills to build them beautiful homes for them to move in to and see if we find any toads or ants using them as well! \nMarch 30: Muddy Marsh\nSquish\, squish\, squish… The marsh is muddy! Why is a marsh important\, what does it do\, and what lives there? These are some of the questions that we’ll answer through out the day. (Tight-fitting water shoes needed) \nRegister by clicking here!

SUMMARY:Advocacy for a Cleaner Earth *****Cancelled due to inclement weather****
DESCRIPTION:Join BCAS and other environmental professionals to learn more about our environment and what personal actions we can do to help make the world a better place! \nThis month’s topic is “Saving Our Birds: What’s Killing Our Birds and What You Can Do About It.” presented by Phil Witmer. \nPhil Witmer is an avid birder and conservationist with over 30 years birding experience. He is a past board member of Bucks County Audubon Society and current president of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club\, one of the oldest birding clubs in the country. He has consulted with Audubon PA and is active in their local BirdTown initiatives. He volunteers banding Northern Saw-whet owls and has attended Powdermill Preserve’s trainings on passerine banding. While certainly not an expert on bird identification\, he has devoted much time to the conservation of birds\, the forces driving their decline and what we need to do to save them. He leads walks at Bucks County Audubon Society and lectures on a variety of related topics. \nThis free event will take place at Delaware Valley University. Parking is off of the New Britain Rd. Entrance to the school.
