SUMMARY:29th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count and Winter Hike
DESCRIPTION:The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a community science project launched in the US in 1998 and expanded worldwide in 2013. Join thousands of birders reporting their data over a four-day period. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. \nMeet at the Visitor Center at 8 am for a brief introduction to the count\, and then let’s take a bird walk!  Dress for the weather. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required by February 12.  \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Young Birder's Club Info Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“You and your friends dare not move.  You have trained for this moment.  You really hope you are well enough hidden by the camouflage hide that you built together the day before. There is a slight movement in the trees to the right.  You use the hand signals to silently alert the others.  You start to aim\, slowly and carefully just like in the practices.  Trying to keep a steady hand.  Any sudden movement and all could be lost.  There!  Directly in your line of sight now.  Quick\, remember not to let the excitement cause a mistake at this critical moment.  Breathe.  Aim.  Press the trigger. Yes!  This could be your new record!  The bird flies out of view. \nYou and your friends look at each other.  You all smile\, you know it was the species you needed for your list without even having to check the guide again.  Last night you all studied the guide carefully so you would be ready to rapidly identify.  You all crowd around the camera and see you were right – the markings are correct and there is no doubt.  Your team leader enters the sighting into the team’s device and submits to the national center.  High fives all around.  Chug some water. \nThen drop back silently into the camouflage hide to see what else you can capture before snack time.  You listen to the sounds in the woods and watch the movements and shapes of the wild surrounding you.  You realize how the bird you just saw in that morning light was much more beautiful than you ever imagined from looking at the books and photos. This is real\, not media\, and it feels good. ” \n  \nSaturday July 13\, 2019 from 9am-10am.  Come to an informational meeting for a Bucks County Audubon young birders’ club planned to start this Fall.  Child care provided and a few snacks.  For those interested in getting up a little earlier\, join us to for a short bird walk at 8am that morning before the meeting.  Open for kids ages 6 and up.

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count & Winter Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join BCAS Naturalists as we take part in another Citizen Science program\, searching for birds around our property! A brief presentation will be followed by a birding hike. \nVolunteers from around the world are invited to count the birds they see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count\, then enter their checklists at birdcount.org. Anyone with internet access can participate\, no matter what their skill level—it’s a great family activity\, too. \nIn the United States and Canada\, 2019 bird lists are more likely to include sightings of winter finches and grosbeaks that are moving farther south than usual in what’s called an “irruption.” This type of movement is often sparked by poor cone\, seed\, and berry crops in parts of Canada. \n“This year is a very exciting one for backyard birders in the East\, headlined by the largest Evening Grosbeak movement in at least two decades\,” says the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Marshall Iliff\, a leader of the eBird program. “From Atlantic Canada to North Carolina\, these colorful feeder visitors have been making a splash.” \nRegistration available here.

SUMMARY:Climate Watch: Citizen Science Training
DESCRIPTION:Beginning this winter\, volunteers for Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch will be visiting their favorite birding spots twice a year\, looking for bluebirds and nuthatches. However\, these familiar species are more than just a joy to behold––both of them can teach scientists how birds are coping with our warming world. By comparing volunteers’ observations of bluebirds and nuthatches\, Climate Watch will test the accuracy of Audubon’s predictions and determine how birds are responding to a changing climate. \nAt this event\, volunteers will learn all the ins-and-outs of Climate Watch\, including how to choose survey points\, conduct surveys in the field\, and submit their final results to the Climate Watch team. The presentation will also explain how Climate Watch is already shedding light on the ways some of our most familiar birds are responding to climate change. Volunteers will also have the chance to participate in a trial-run of a survey\, and the opportunity to discuss their assignment for the count with one of Bucks Audubon’s Climate Watch coordinators. \nWant to be a part of this training day so that you can participate in the Climate watch project? Contact our Citizen Science Committee Members:\nBob McGarry – rjmcg27@gmail.com OR  LeRoy Tabb – tabbleroy@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Nighthawk Watch
DESCRIPTION:Join Bob McGarry for an evening of birding for Nighthawks at Fort Washington State park. Common Nighthawks are most active at dawn and dusk\, not night\, while they forage for aerial insects.Recent studies suggest a substantial decline in numbers of this species\, perhaps owing to increased predation\, indiscriminate use of pesticides leading to lowered insect numbers\, or habitat loss. Feel free to bring your binoculars and/or camera! Dress appropriately. \nThis event is free\, but we require registration. Space is capped at 20 participants\, so make sure to sign up early! \nIf you are interested in carpooling to the event\, please arrive at Bucks County Audubon Society (2877 Creamery Road\, New Hope\, PA 18938) at 5pm.
